Final Defence

Defence will be held at Erasmus University Rotterdam, Erasmus Medical Center, upon decision of the Faculty. The Examining Board will consist of maximum 5 members, who are experts of the scientific subject, and most of whom should be external to the Faculty.

The Examining Board members will be selected by the Faculty.

The PhD candidate shall show capacity and readiness to carry out independent research activity in the field and defends the thesis against the  objections of the Examining Board.

The thesis will be written and defended in English.

Admission to defence must be arranged in accordance with the national and institutional regulations of the three Universities parties.

Following the successful defence, each Programme graduate is awarded with one doctorate degree by each of the Partner universities, only if all criteria are met.

The thesis summarizes in a logical and coordinated way the scientific activities of the PhD student in the 4 years of the course. The drafting of the thesis follows the general characteristics of scientific works: introduction, results, discussion, materials and methods and bibliography. The latter must be detailed and allow the reproducibility of the data. The scientific publications of the candidate during the 4 years of the PhD must be attached to the thesis.

One year before the defense of the thesis, the candidate presents the Faculty with an extensive report of his work and a thesis plan. If the Faculty, having heard the opinion of the tutor, approves the work carried out, the candidate is sent to prepare the thesis. Before defending the thesis, it will be examined by 2 external reviews. The Faculty will decide on the appropriate timing for this review and communicate it to the candidate. Dates and reviewers will also be communicated to the PhD office (translational.oncology@unito.it).

The reviewers will evaluate the eligibility for the defense of the thesis considering the originality of the data and their presentation, the critical capacity, the accuracy of the methods and the contribution given in scientific advancement with respect to the initial state of the art.
